Born and raised amidst the tranquil landscapes of Drøbak, a picturesque town on the outskirts of Oslo, Norway, Christian Svinddal epitomizes the qualities of calm and curiosity. His formative years were steeped in an intimate connection with nature, laying the foundation for his lifelong affinity for the arts. Nurturing his creative instincts, he pursued his passion at the renowned Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design in London, where destiny intertwined his path with that of his Japanese wife. Following a stint in London, they embarked on a journey to Osaka before settling down in Oslo.
Christian describes his style as simple, precise, and minimal, almost scientific in approach.
His journey into the realm of photography is deeply rooted in his upbringing, where he was immersed in the world of imagery through his father, who was a professional photographer. From the sacred confines of the darkroom to the bustling studio, photography was a way of life. Christian describes his style as simple, precise, and minimal, almost scientific in approach. His images feature toned-down colors, often warm and soft with an analogue feel. Most of his work comprises close-up studies of objects shot with a macro lens, distinguished from typical macro photography by the incorporation of more depth of field, challenging the viewer's perception of scale. Moreover, Christian's artistic vision is enriched by his deep fascination with Japanese culture, nurtured by his wife's heritage. His time spent in Japan has profoundly influenced his work, drawing inspiration from Wabi-Sabi aesthetics and ikebana.
